Echo Quick

Normal strain values (quick reference)

Common adult GLS ranges used in clinical echo. Vendor + method matter; confirm your lab’s reference set.

Global longitudinal strain (LV GLS)

Normal
~ −18% or more negative
Borderline
~ −16% to −18%
Abnormal
Less negative than ~ −16%
Many labs report GLS as a negative number (more negative = better). Some displays use absolute values; always verify sign convention.

Practical notes

  • GLS varies with vendor/software, blood pressure, and image quality.
  • Compare serial GLS using the same platform when possible.
  • Regional strain patterns can be helpful (e.g. apical sparing), but interpret with context.
